ReShade applies post-processing on the game client. Install it only when the server permits it and the ReShade release supports your client’s renderer. Do not select FXServer.exe: that is the dedicated server, not the process drawing your game.
Edition check: Cfx.re’s Enhanced documentation currently states that Pure Mode is always enabled and graphics mods cannot be used during Enhanced early access. The modification workflow below is for a permitted Legacy setup.
Prepare a reversible setup
Download the installer from the official ReShade site. Read the release instructions and your server’s graphics policy. Record the current renderer, settings and frame rate, and back up files that the installation will change.
Remove conflicting graphics injectors through their documented uninstall process before testing. A preset is configuration for effects; it may require shader packages that are not included in the preset file.
Install for the actual client
- Close the game. Use the official setup instructions to identify the game executable and rendering API used by your FiveM client installation. The executable can vary by game build; do not guess from the launcher’s filename.
- Select that executable and the matching API in ReShade Setup. If the client or renderer is not supported, stop rather than copying DLLs from unrelated guides.
- Install only the effect packages needed for your intended preset. Keep their source and version recorded.
- Start the client and check for the ReShade overlay. Open it using the configured overlay key, commonly Home, and start with effects disabled.
- Enable one effect at a time and compare the same scene. Check menus, text readability, night scenes and frame time before saving a preset.
Fix a failed installation
No overlay: recheck the selected executable, renderer and setup log. A connection rejected by server rules requires restoring a permitted client configuration.
A crash introduced by the installation: close the game and use the setup program’s uninstall path for the same target, then verify the clean client. Do not disable security software or server integrity checks to force it to load.
Missing effects: inspect the preset’s documented shader requirements and search paths. Low frame rate: disable costly effects individually and compare. The official ReShade project provides release and issue information.
