Choose between a VPS and a dedicated server by testing your actual FiveM workload and comparing operating responsibilities. Player slots and RAM alone do not establish capacity, and neither hosting type guarantees low latency or DDoS protection.
What changes between the two
A VPS is a virtual machine on a physical host. Its CPU allocation may be shared or dedicated, depending on the plan. Ask what is reserved, what can contend with neighbours and which usage limits apply.
A dedicated server gives you a physical machine for your workload. It removes competition from other customers’ virtual machines on that host, but your own resources can still contend for CPU, memory, disk and network capacity. Security and network protection remain separate questions.
Compare the complete service
Check the processor, allocation policy, location, storage, network protection, backup restoration, administration access and support boundary. Compare the recurring cost including operating-system licences and extras you actually require. Read the provider’s current offer instead of using a historical price table.
A managed game host can be a better operational fit when you do not want to maintain an operating system. With an unmanaged VPS or dedicated server, plan for patching, firewall rules, backups, monitoring and recovery.
Run a representative trial
Deploy a test copy with the same artifacts, resources and realistic database size. Exercise character loading, inventory, vehicles and your busy gameplay areas. Record server profiles and host metrics alongside client behaviour. Test a backup restore and a complete export.
If performance deteriorates, identify whether the cause is a resource, host contention or network path before changing the hosting type. Moving an expensive script to a larger machine may leave the underlying problem intact.
Choose with an exit plan
Use the option that meets the measured workload and your maintenance capacity. Keep the source files, database and recovery instructions portable. Rehearse a move on a test endpoint before changing the live join path.
