Use these ten checks before opening or expanding a FiveM server. Each identifies a common operating mistake and a concrete way to catch it before players are affected.
1. Updating without a recovery path
Record the running resource versions, read the migration notes and test the change on a copy. Keep compatible files and database backups together.
2. Keeping backups you have never restored
Restore into an isolated instance and verify a character, inventory and vehicle. A successful backup job alone does not prove recovery.
3. Giving every helper full admin access
List the actions each role needs. Test one permitted and one forbidden action with separate staff and player accounts.
4. Adding features before fixing the first session
Try joining, voice setup, character creation and one basic activity with a new account. Remove the points where only staff knowledge makes progress possible.
5. Guessing at performance problems
Capture the actual slow action and inspect client, server and host evidence separately. Avoid replacing resources based only on a generic timing threshold.
6. Publishing rules without examples
Explain observable behaviour, exceptions and consequences. Give staff a shared evidence standard and players a clear appeal route.
7. Collecting feedback without responding
Record recurring problems and tell players what will change, what will not and why. Do not promise every requested feature.
8. Advertising more than the server delivers
Use current gameplay and accurate joining requirements. Promote only during hours when your team can support new arrivals.
9. Depending on one person or account
Keep operator-controlled recovery access, document essential services and review staff departures. Avoid shared passwords and undocumented ownership.
10. Ignoring recurring costs and platform rules
Plan for hosting, backups, licences and maintenance. Review the current monetization rules before offering server-linked benefits; calling a payment a donation does not establish an exemption.
